Yoga for Mood

Saturday, January 23 1:30 – 4:30pm

Whether you’ve got mood swings, anxiety or depression, yoga as medicine can offer lasting and proven solutions. While conventional medicine frames mood problems as “mental illness” to be disposed of and treated away with prescriptions as quickly as possible, we can find deeper meaning by meeting mood symptoms with curiosity and inquiry. This deeper, integrative approach creates an invitation to heal rather than to suppress.

In addition to our yoga practice, come learn the role of nutrition, especially flour and sugar, in feeding mood problems, as well as other natural solutions such as nutraceuticals, botanicals and bioidentical hormones for neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances. Understand the role of hormonal flux, especially pregnancy, post-partum (a menopausal state), premenstrual, premenopause, and menopause in mood issues. Join Dr. Sara Gottfried, MD, for a fascinating, rigorous session of yoga for mood support combined with didactic and interactive discussion of how integrative medicine fits in and heals.

Yoga for Restoring Libido & Energy

Saturday, March 20 1:30 – 4:30pm

Is your energy lower than 10 years ago? Would you rather have sex or read a book? Join Dr. Sara for a strong practice to cultivate vital life force. Class will move energy consciously through kriyas, core strengthening, breath work, standing poses and inversions. We will restore, renew and practice techniques to enhance creativity, passion and your libido naturally.

Dr. Sara will lead an interactive discussion of the hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances that often cause or accompany decreased libido especially estrogen dominance, subtle thyroid dysfunction, and low testosterone & DHEA as it relates to adrenal dysregulation. We will focus on reasons plus natural solutions for your energy issues and/or low libido (and disconnection from the sexual self) using yoga and natural therapies. Specific issues such as the natural drop in libido that accompanies post-partum, perimenopause, menopause, as well the lubrication-challenged vagina, will be addressed.

Yoga for Strong Bones, Joints & Metabolism

Saturday, May 1 1:30 – 4:30pm

Are my bones dissolving? Do I need Boniva? What are these extra 10+ pounds I’ve packed on & how do I lose them? Why are my shoulders and hips getting injured now that I’m 35+?

Come lubricate your joints, hydrate your connective tissue & create strong bones using yoga asana. This class is primarily yin yoga and core work, combined with interactive discussion of the vast proven options for our aging bones and joints, from quarter-dose estrogen therapy to strontium to eating from composted soils that are rich in bone-building minerals. Estrogen has over 400 jobs in the body, and as it declines for women aged 35+, you’ll notice more injuries, achiness, less mobility and feel less juicy. Yoga and integrative medicine offer more juiciness.

Note: Dr. Sara’s workshops are appropriate for the beginner through advanced yogini, and all ages. All workshops are approximately 70% asana/pranayama and 30% didactice. Fees include a dense, inspiring syllabus.

Biography:

Sara Gottfried, MD, is a Board-Certified Gynecologist, Certified Yoga Teacher and Integrative Medicine Physician. After graduating from Harvard Medical School, she completed her residency in OB/GYN at UCSF where she still serves on the teaching faculty. Dr. Gottfried has 20+ years of experience in integrative medicine for women. Her training and experience has been pivotal in the development of her novel ideas about “evidence-based integration” of conventional women’s health with complementary and alternative medicine. She is both top-tier physician scientist superbly grounded in the latest data and a gifted healer. Her expertise is greatest in menopausal medicine, bioidentical hormones, prevention of breast cancer and issues of libido.

Dr. Gottfried is a life-long student of ancient healing systems such as yoga, botanicals and Ayurveda. At a young age she learned yoga from her great-grandmother and has practiced daily since 1989. After discovering that her night sweats worsened with her Ashtanga practice, she developed a remarkably effective approach to managing premenopausal and menopausal symptoms with a combination of yoga, and when needed, nutraceutical, botanical and bioidentical hormone support.

Dr. Gottfried feels blessed to have studies with yoga pioneers such as Ana Forrest, Shiva Rea and Patricia Walden, all of whom have greatly influenced her teaching.
